In Windows 8, this would be for desktop programs only, and not to uninstall Store apps.

In Windows XP, this would have been in Add and Remove Programs instead.

  1. Select a program, and then click Uninstall. Some programs include the option to change or repair the program in addition to uninstalling it, but many simply offer the option to uninstall. To change a program, click Change or Repair. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Notes

  • If the program you want to uninstall is not listed, it might not have been written for this version of Windows. To uninstall the program, check the information that came with the program.
  • To learn more about turning off programs and features that are included with Windows, see Turn Windows features on or off.
    Tip
    • If the program you want to uninstall is not listed in Programs and Features, then it may not have been written for this version of Windows. To uninstall the program, check the information that came with the program, or go to the program publisher's/manufacturer's website. Most programs install automatically in the C:\Program Files folder (OPTION THREE below). Look in this folder some programs also include an uninstall program that you can use.
    • Programs and features included with Windows 7 can be turned off in Windows Features.
    • If the program doesn't uninstall completely the first time, sometimes running the uninstall program a second time will succeed.
    • If the above option doesn't work, try uninstalling the program while Windows 7 is running in safe mode.
    • If you installed the program recently, you can try using System Restore to return your computer's system files to an earlier restore point dated before you installed the program.

Change how Windows installs or notifies you about updates

If you don't want updates to be installed automatically, you can choose to be notified when updates apply to your computer instead. Then, you can download and install them yourself, or you can set Windows to automatically download updates, and then notify you so you can install them yourself. When you run the Windows Update, you might not see the Install Shield update listed. This means that you have the most updated version of the software already installed on your system.

  1. In the left pane, click Change settings.
  2. Under Important updates, click one of the following:
    • Install updates automatically (recommended)
    • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
    • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
    • Never check for updates (not recommended)
  3. To schedule your automatic updates, next to Install new updates, select the day and time you want updates to occur.
  4. To get recommended updates for your computer, under Recommended updates, select the Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates check box.
  5. To allow anyone using the computer to make updates, select the Allow all users to install updates on this computer check box. This applies only to updates and software that are installed manually; automatic updates will be installed regardless of the user.
  6. Click OK. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Notes

  • If your computer is in hibernation at a scheduled time, installation will begin immediately the next time you start your computer. You will receive a message that asks you if you want to postpone the installation. Click the message and follow the instructions to set how long you want Windows to wait.
  • If you turn off automatic updating, make sure you check for new updates regularly. For more information, see Install Windows updates.
Microsoft offers an extension to Windows Update called Microsoft Update. This service allows you to get updates for other Microsoft products, as well as receive notices of new Microsoft software that you can download and install for free. Here's how to get updates and notices about new software:
  1. If you've never checked for updates before, in the left pane, click Check for updates. Wait for Windows Update to finish checking for updates.
  2. In the Windows Update dialog box, click Find out more under Get updates for other Microsoft products. Follow the steps on the screen to start using Microsoft Update.
  3. In the left pane, click Change settings.
  4. Under Microsoft Update, select the Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows check box.
  5. To get notifications of new Microsoft software, select the Show me detailed notifications when new Microsoft software is available check box.
  6. Click OK.Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

How long does it take to download an update from computer?

How many update did it say were available at the start? It sounds as if you haven't updated for awhile. Normally if a dozen or so average size updates are installed, the process may take a total of 15 or 20 minutes. It's possible that you can corrupt a file by interrupting the installation of an update. That's why they always tell you not to interrupt the update installation. If the update has been running for 5 hours and the updates were nothing unusual in nature, you may have another problem of some kind. Tip: If you right-click on any file or text and drag it while continuing to hold the right button, when you let go you will be given the option to move or copy that file or text. This saves you the extra step of having to right-click where you want to paste the item.
